What are Bed Bugs?
Bed bugs are flat, reddish-brown, oval insects up to 4 to 5 mm long or the size of an apple seed. Swollen and reddish after a blood meal.
Behavior, Diet & Habits
Bed bugs only feed on blood and have been known to survive up to a year without feeding. They prefer to be more active at night when people are sleeping.
Bed bugs are found in the crack and crevices of mattresses, sheets, upholstered furniture, electrical outlets and baseboards. They are often found in hotels. This is because they can easily travel from room to room, in visitors luggage and other personal belongings.
Bed bugs can be picked up just about anywhere. They can very easily hid and have been known to hitchhike in luggage, personal belongings and even on people. Once they have gotten into a building, they can be very difficult to control without professional help.
Females bed bugs can lay one to five eggs a daily. In a bed bugs lifetime they may lay 200 to 500 eggs and can live for more than 300 days under normal room temperatures, with enough food.
Signs of a Bed Bug Infestation
- Bite marks.
If you or a family member is bitten, you will see red welts on the skin. Since bite marks can come from various types of bugs, you will need another sign to determine is there are bed bugs.
- Seeing bed bugs.
Adult bed bugs about the same size and shape of an apple seed.
- Skin Casings.
As bed bugs grow they shed their skin which can help identify whether or not you have bed bugs.
After feeding, they return to their favorite hiding spot to defecate. They leave behind black to brown stains on porous surfaces. Sometime you can see black to brown mounds on surfaces that are not porous.
